Can anyone help?
My wife Charmaine Duguid (nee Ferriera) has been trying to find information about her mother’s family for many years.  Her mother (Johanna Ferreira) died last week and for some reason never disclosed information about her birth family.  At the very end when she was very frail (with advanced pneumonia) she wanted us to notify all her family.  We don’t know what her reasons were for being estranged from her family and we don’t really care, we would just like to get in touch with them and to notify them of her passing and would be really grateful if you could help. We have the death notice from the doctor if you should need a copy. The details we have are as follows:

1)      Full Name: Johanna Christina Gertruida Ferreira (Maiden name: Pieterse) AKA “Joey”.

Born: 19th December 1947 to father David Jacobus Pieterse (who was born in SA) and Mother: Maria Dorothea Botha, (also born in SA).

Birth Place: 5 Porter Cement Homes, Arcadia, Salisbury.

Birth certificate Entry Number: SBY/1162/47. Date of Reg: 06th December 1947.

Further info: James Duguid [zamgeobo@zol.co.zw]

2)      Joey married Daniel. C. O’Connell in around 1969 and had two children by him, Ryan (born 23rd August 1969) and Magdalina (born 9th April 1971). She then got divorced around 1973.  She then gave birth to Rodney on 14th April 1974. (the birth certificate claims the father was “unknown”).

3)      Joey then got re-married to Andries Hendrik Ferreira on 23rd January 1976, whom she was married to until his death on the 3rd January 2000. She had to children with Andries, Charmaine (born 1976) and Adrian (born 1978).

What we are seeking is any information pertaining to Joey’s parents and her brothers and sisters.  We are not certain of any names for her siblings but would desperately want to find out their names and get in touch with them.  They were likely also born in the then Salisbury.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Regards,

James Duguid.

Bernard Levine

I'm trying to locate my great, great grandfather (Bernard Levine)
who died around 1900 in the whereabouts of what is modern day Harare/Zimbabwe.  I'm told he is buried in a local cemetery.  I've got very little information to provide other than that he was from England and died in either a boat or train accident around 1900 or thereabout.  It's assumed that he was in the import/export business... possibly as an independent contractor in the mining industry.  He was believed to be Jewish and of Lithuanian descent.

In my search, I came across the Zimbabwe, Death Registers, 1890-1977; Index to Death Register, 1892-1977 via Family Search (https://familysearch.org/image/viewer#uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/collection/1837900/waypoints).    I've located a Bernard Levine in the Death Indexes via Surnames KE-L on page 34 of 48 (near top, left).  His death record is noted as: D.R. 1794/72.  When looking in the death registers there isn't a Volume 1794 to locate him on page 72 as noted.  I've searched most of the early volumes (1900+/-) but I don't see him listed anywhere?  Do you have any suggestions on how I could locate his record?  I've searched most of the local graveyards, as well, without any success.  Thanks in advance for any help in solving a mystery that has eluded our family for over a century.

Respectfully,

Interesting info to help you find records

re yr query on William Charles Hoaten, here: http://www.lind.org.zw/genweb/surnames.htm

I found his Death Record, D.R.811/55, here:

The index for that I found here:

The repository for the Zimbabwe Death Records is here:

from that root page address (above) you’ll find links to two sets of ledgers.

#1 Zimbabwe, Death notices, 1904-1976 holds the doctor’s Death Notices, and those are arranged by district and year.
Those have details about how the person died, age, and so on, but won’t have dependents details.
If you know where and when someone died you might find their Death Notice by browsing the images in those place/date folders.
They were not all filed in strict chronological order, and some death notices were filed even a year after the event, so it’s worthwhile to keep looking long after the event date.

#2 Zimbabwe, Death Registers, 1890-1977; Index to Death Register, 1892-1977 is more useful as a starting point, because that has an index (or three of them, to be more precise), and these usually have information about the person and dependents.
For example, names starting with H could be in the index ‘H’ folders, could be in the index ‘A-Z’, and could be in the index titled ‘Death Indexes Open files’.
In addition, the early volumes have also have an individual index on the first 25-30 pages.
Having found the name in the index, you’ll have a reference, something like D.R. 20/100, which then that means you’ll find the image in Volume 20, numbered as #100.
(Those you’ll find in the folder titled ‘Death Registers’ –it’s at the bottom of the page that has the alphabetical folders.)
In 1953 they changed the filing system so that the reference is year/number not volume/number. This means that a D.R with index number D.R. 55/100 could be in #100 volume 55 or in year 1955 – you just have to look,if it’s not the one, it will be the other.

So given that you want to find D.R.20/100 you go to volume 20, and you’ll see that the volume contains say 350 pages. Type in page 125 (to jump past the volume index pages to get close to the number you want), then page or jump forward/back from there until you find the D.R that you want.
Some of the index references can’t be found in any of the online volumes, ie. three-number references like D.R. 20/100/29 just points to a list ‘Master Estate’ list, and you won’t find any files online  with the index MISC, ADM, or LW.
